How much is a 14K gold ring worth?

A 14K gold ring's scrap value by weight at today's gold price, what to subtract for stones, and when a ring is worth more than its gold.

A 14K ring is 58.3% gold, so its scrap value comes down to one number: its weight. At today's gold price of $3,876.40/ozt, 14K gold is worth $72.70/g in melt value.

14K ring value by weight

Rings vary a lot: a thin band and a wide men's signet can differ several times over, so weigh yours rather than guessing from its size.

How to weigh a ring properly

  • Use a scale that reads to at least 0.1 g; a kitchen scale is fine, a jeweler's scale is better.
  • Weigh in grams. If a buyer quotes in pennyweight (dwt), 1 dwt is 1.555 g.
  • Check the stamp inside the band: 14K, 14KT or 585. If it says 14K GF or 14K HGE, it is gold-filled or plated, not solid gold — see gold-filled vs gold-plated.

Subtract the stones

Stones add weight that isn't gold. A one-carat stone weighs 0.2 g, so small diamonds barely change the scale reading, but a large colored stone or a cluster of them can. If you know the stone weights, subtract them; if not, a buyer will estimate.

Most scrap buyers pay for the gold only. A ring with a significant diamond should be valued by a jeweler or appraiser before you sell it for scrap: the stone may be worth more than the metal.

When a ring is worth more than its gold

  • Designer and signed rings (with a maker's name stamped next to the karat) often sell for well above melt as whole pieces.
  • Antique and vintage rings with fine detail have a collector market.
  • Plain wedding bands usually sell for close to melt, so the calculator figure is a good guide.
