What does Crown mean?

In UK hallmarks a crown is the traditional standard mark for gold, shown alongside the numeric fineness (e.g. 375, 750). Today it is a voluntary additional mark.

  • Not the same as Sheffield's pre-1975 crown town mark on silver; Sheffield switched to a rose for gold in 1904 to avoid this confusion.
  • The fineness number, not the crown, gives purity.
