What does Crown mean?

A crown was the Sheffield Assay Office's town mark for silver from 1773 until 1975, when Sheffield replaced it with the Yorkshire rose for all precious metals after the Hallmarking Act 1973. An antique silver piece hallmarked in Sheffield can therefore show a crown.

Often confused with

  • Not the UK crown on gold, which is a gold standard mark; Sheffield switched to a rose for gold in 1904 to avoid this confusion.
  • The crown alone does not give the purity - check the lion passant or fineness number.
