What does Lion passant mean?

The lion passant is the English standard mark for sterling silver (925). It was added to English marks in 1544, was struck by all English assay offices after 1720, and today is an optional traditional mark alongside the numeric 925. Before 1821 the London lion was 'guardant' (head turned to face the viewer).
