What does Lion's head erased mean?

The lion's head erased - a lion's head with a jagged cut neck - was struck on Britannia-standard silver (958) during 1697-1720, replacing the leopard's head, alongside the Britannia figure. Chester, Exeter, Newcastle and York were also authorised to strike it.
